Tell us about your creative process!
I always look for inspiration when I’m getting started with a project, which may come from anything around me. This can range from something completely random I see on the street, a pattern on a dress, pop culture, or the work of other designers, bakers and creatives. Next, I put pen to paper, and start sketching designs and exploring colour palettes – then I get baking!
We love your cute, trendy and downright sassy baked goods – How do you choose what designs to create?
Thank you! I sell some of my baked goods, so those would depend on the suggestions and/or brief of the clients. Most clients just give me a theme, and they leave the rest up to me.
I’ve also worked on quite a few collaborations recently, and we usually just bounce ideas off each other to get started, then the rest blossoms from there!
Additionally, I have a ‘to bake/to experiment’ list, which are my personal projects. As I’ve had less time to work on them, the list is constantly growing!
What is one tip for basic bakers, we want to get better… but we may still be at the boxed cake stage.
Do not be afraid to trial! I’ve learnt a lot from trial and error, as well as reading books and blogs, or watching Youtube videos. Perseverance, patience and practice is key!
What is the kitchen implement you couldn’t live without?
I think it will have to be my electric mixer, haha.
What do you think is tastiest treat you have ever made?
Even though cakes aren’t really my forte, it would probably have to be something simple like a red velvet and white chocolate mud cake with cream cheese frosting! This is purely based on taste! I have a long way to go with my cake decorating haha. Otherwise, I always get wonderful feedback for my honey shortbread cookies.
How did you first get into baking?
I’ve been interested in baking since high school, but through out school and university, I never really had the chance to bake! After graduating a course I did not enjoy and having no full time job, baking became an outlet for me, and I have been addicted ever since!
Let us in on a few of your tips for balancing work and play!
I find that the busier I am, the more productive and organised I become in all aspects of life. This does not mean overworking and burning out though (which I am sure we have all been guilty of doing)! I think it’s important to set down time for yourself, whether that’s reading, listening to music, spending time on a new hobby and so forth; in addition to making time for friends, family, and personal health. As we get older and have less free time, it is imperative to prioritise. Figure out who and what is most important in your life, and always make time for them!
What word represents the twenty-something years?
I’m not sure if I can just pick one word! In regards to what I am currently going through in life, I think the two words which sum up my current year would be discovery and pursuit. This is relating to self-discovery of what I want to do with my life, and then of course chasing those dreams!
