It seems like everyone we talk to these days is trying to find the perfect fitness routine, one that kicks their butts, motivates and (of course) gives them the toned and strong body that we all strive for. This is where Kate of CORE•OLOGY comes in, creating these bodies for the women of Charlotte and doing it with a passion that’s obvious from the first few words you exchange with her. If you haven’t tried a Lagree Fitness Method class using the Megaformer we can tell you that it will absolutely kick your ass, but it will give you results and with the perfect motivating partner like Kate you can’t go wrong.
Tell us about the birth of CORE•OLOGY? What kickstarted its creation?
I have always had the love for fitness and the passion for helping others become the healthiest, happiest, strongest form of themselves. Being a personal trainer and a Compressive Peak Pilates Instructor, I was always looking for the newest, greatest fitness regimens. When I met the Megaformer- I immediately fell in love. Not only was it the hardest workout I have ever done, but I felt and saw results immediately. I have always had the vision of opening up a pilates studio, but after becoming obsessed with the Lagree Fitness Method and coaching at 2 different Megaformer studio’s in the DC Metro area, I knew that’s what kind of studio I wanted to open. Soon after moving to Charlotte, my fiancé Chase and I decided to combine his passion for coffee and my vision of having a boutique Megaformer studio and CORE•OLOGY was born.
Have you always been fitness oriented?
Yes, I grew up dancing and playing sports. After graduating from the University of Minnesota I tested out the corporate world but came to realize it wasn’t a fit for me and transitioned into making a career out of fitness by coaching at a variety of different gyms and private studios around the DC Metro Area.
You combine the Lagree Fitness Method and the Megaformer… what does this do for your clients? What’s so special about the method?
We incorporate the The Lagree Fitness Method, which is the most innovative approach to full body conditioning. The workout is performed on an exclusive technology called the Megaformer and the intent of the workout is to fatigue your slow twitch muscle fibers, the ones that lengthen your body and produce energy by converting fats into energy aerobically, to failure so they can rebuild leaner and stronger. This workout is extremely beneficial for our clients because every move on this machine is done at the highest intensity, but is low impact and does not cause harm on their body’s muscles and joints, allowing anyone from athletes and fitness gurus to clients with injuries and limitations to do it.
Another unique aspect of the workout is that it incorporates all elements of physical fitness not just in one session, but in each and every move and you burn calories for up to 24 hours after your sweat session. We say CORE•OLOGY is not a gym it’s a hidden gem. From day one our vision has always been to be more than just a fitness class, we create a sense of community where our clients can be who they want to be or transform into who they want to become. This workout with change you, it will lean you out, you will become stronger, and the community will help you create the best, strongest version of yourself!
Could you share a few quick tips for the ladies that may be struggling to get into a fitness routine?
Yes, fitness can be intimidating. A lot of times women have the fear of not knowing what to do when walking into a gym or worry that lifting weights is going to cause them to bulk up. Even the Megaformer itself is a crazy contraption that you look at and think “what in the world am I getting myself into?” Getting over the fear is the first step I would advise ladies that are struggling to get into a fitness routine. Your mind is a powerful thing and it is crucial that you have confidence, a positive self worth, and trust in the entire process. It won’t be easy, but in the end the handwork will pay off. You know what they say it will feel more automatic after 18 days of practice.
Another helpful strategy to get into a fitness routine is to grab a buddy to take it on with you. Not only will it make fitness a lot more fun, but you have the accountability to show up and the support and drive to push a little harder.
Finding a studio and/or exercise regimen that you connect with also plays a key factor on sticking to a fitness routine. Find a welcoming community that supports you, pushes you, holds you accountable, and creates a safe, healthy environment. I promise, if you find something you connect with working out will no longer be a chore, but you will crave it. At CORE•OLOGY we say “walking through the door is the hardest part.” Once you are there, you are in great hands. The coaches and community will welcome you and cheer you on before, during, and after class.
What word encompasses the twenty-something years?
What are the top two lessons you think every girlboss who dreams of starting her own business should know?
Do what you love. If you have a dream chase it. Take the leap and I promise you will never look back, but if you don’t, you will regret it. My mother gave me the best advice and still rings true to me today: “First find a job you love and enjoy doing and then find a way to make money at it- then it will never be considered work”. I used to work as a Technical Recruiter and Account Manager. Yes, the money was there but the passion and happiness was nonexistent. It wasn’t easy leaving a stable position that paid well and had all the right benefits, but the reward of doing something I loved was worth every penny. In owning your own business you get rewarded in so many more impactful ways.
Timing is of the essence. Business don’t develop overnight. Great things take a lot of time, effort, love, and patience. Keep pushing and driving if things are working out a little slower than you had planned. You may have to wait along time before seeing the return. Try not to get discouraged but instead keep pushing and driving forward and it will be worth it- I promise.
What is your favorite way to start the day on a happy and productive note?
Considering I am usually at the studio bright and early, I have a strong cup of joe from the CORE•OLOGY Cafe to wake up. I love working out in the morning and when schedule allows to take different fitness classes around Charlotte. It makes me happy to have breakfast, workout, and shower all before 8am to have a productive rest of the day!
How do you unwind?
Of course I unwind with lots of wine. I also love escaping through traveling, trying new restaurants, and attending sporting events with my fiancé, as well as hanging and BBQing with friends.
What core things make up a happy, healthy life?
To me the top core things that make up a happy, healthy life include:
- Love You
- Have a positive attitude and exercise your smile
- Be true to yourself
- Be giving and loving to others
- Nourish yourself and your body by exercising and eating healthy
- Find balance in your life
The reason we chose CORE•OLOGY is because it means the study of your core. Not only did we want our community to work their core and get flat, strong abs, but we wanted an environment where they were able to dig deep and define their core values and live a healthy, happy life by creating the strongest version of themselves.
Quick: sweet or sour?
What is one discouraging moment that you’ve faced during your career and how did you overcome it?
Being a first time entrepreneur is something you never can be fully prepared for. I didn’t know what to expect going into opening my own business and came to realize I am never going to know what to expect. Charlotte is a wonderful place to open up a small fitness boutique, but at first I was frightened that there was so much competition and would get discouraged that I wasn’t doing as well as other studios. I soon came to realize that completion is a good thing, it’s healthy. Competition has allowed me to push a little harder, excel a little faster, and to always be one step ahead. If you are always following and copying your competition your view never changes, be the leader up front and your view is always changing.
Have you changed as a person since the founding of your company? How?
Absolutely, I continue to learn more about myself and grow stronger everyday. Having a business is hard work, there is a lot to juggle, but I have come to learn what is most important to me in life and how to balance that in a healthy way. I have come to have a better self appreciation for myself.
