Do you have the perfect bauble? Hate when it doesn’t sparkle? So do we. Which is why we were so excited when we found Baublerella, founded by Chevis. What’s in a name? Everything. Baublerella is the perfect name for the cutest business we have ever seen. Chevis is a ray of sunshine herself, so we aren’t even a little bit surprised that her business kicks some serious butt.
What was the inspiration for Baublerella?
Baublerella was inspired by the fashionable nature of jewelry along with the idea that jewelry cleaner should be free from harmful chemicals. The idea came about when I forgot to clean my wedding ring because I was rushing to get out the door for a party. I said to my husband, “I wish I had a product I could keep in my purse to clean my jewelry on the go.” That night, the idea for the Bling Brush (one of our first products) was born.
The name Baublerella is absolutely perfect for your business, how did you decide on it?
Thank you, that is quite the compliment because it was tough! I wanted something whimsical that related to jewelry but also had a special meaning. The name was completely serendipitous and when Baublerella popped into my head late one night on the couch, I immediately fell in love with it! Baublerella is the combination of the word bauble, a word my Granny Dixie used to refer to jewelry, with the classic fairytale character, Cinderella.
What’s the weirdest place you have used your Bling Brush or Glitzy Glove?
I think the most bizarre place was on a little inflatable boat in the British Virgin Islands. I was on a trip with girlfriends and my best friend’s ring was coated in sunscreen. I whipped out the Bling Brush and gave her ring a quick polish!
We love that philanthropy is such a big part of your mission, tell us what this part of your business means to you!
When establishing Baublerella, I knew I didn’t want to start a business just to sell products. I wanted to build a brand with a purpose, and as a member of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, I knew I wanted that purpose to be rooted in giving back to women.
When I came across Rae’s Hope, our charity partner, I teared up watching the organizations’ video because I knew it would be the perfect fit. They are so sweet and eager to learn, and have the best little spirits. When I’m sitting at my desk it helps to know the more we sell the more money we can give and the more lives we will touch.
What word defines the twenty-something years?
What advice would you share with women looking to build their own businesses?
Trust your gut, look for the silver lining in moments you believe to be failures and celebrate milestones — both big and small. Also, as cliché as it sounds, you need a plan. Starting a business can be daunting and there is nobody around to keep you on the right track. When you catch yourself in a situation where you don’t know where to turn next you can always look at your plan and get back on course. It’s also extremely rewarding when you look back on the goals you achieved.
What are your go-to pieces of jewelry?
Jewelry is very sentimental to me so my go-to pieces are typically representative of special moments in my life. On a daily basis I wear a watch my dad gave me for high school graduation, a pair of diamond knot earrings that were a Christmas gift, a quartz and diamond heart necklace my mom gave me for my birthday and of course the engagement ring my husband designed.
Tell us what it felt like to start your own business! Risky? Exciting? Both? When did it start to feel real that you had created a successful business?
To be honest, it was really hard in the beginning. I was used to working with teams of talented women I could bounce around ideas with and I loved the structure of knowing what I needed to accomplish each day. It wasn’t until we started shipping our products that Baublerella started to feel real and became an exciting brand in the making.
Shortly after, customer reviews raving about the products began to pour in and I got the feeling Baublerella was on its way to becoming a successful business. We came full circle on December 17 when the Bling Brush was featured on The Today Show just one year (to the day) after we launched Baublerella.com and started taking pre-orders. I grew up watching the show so seeing Baublerella on Kathie Lee and Hoda felt like a dream.
It’s a Sunday afternoon – what can we find you doing?
After unwinding at a yoga or Pilates session you will find me in the kitchen cooking and listening to music. I have always been passionate about cooking and love to serve my friends and family delicious meals. My favorite cookbooks are It’s All Good and Barefoot in Paris because the recipes use very little ingredients and the dishes are full of flavor!
Tell us one thing we couldn’t find out about you online!
My nickname in graduate school was Elle Woods. I think it’s because I have always been obsessed with the color pink, have blonde hair and usually travel everywhere with my little Maltese, Madeline.
