Have you ever walked into a Target for one item only to emerge about an hour later with a giant bag of things that you could potentially need at some point in the future… maybe? But they are cute… right? Wait, shit! You forgot the laundry detergent that you went in for in the first place.
Been there- this is what I like to call the Target Triangle (like the Bermuda Triangle).
Target is a magical place, this is a known fact. It has everything you could ever need from nail polish, to DVDs and dinner supplies for a night in, to a cute and cozy pair of winter pjs and even toys for your puppy. It’s no wonder that it is physically impossible to go into the Target Triangle without spending $100. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining about the things that I come out of Target with, just the unexpected impact on my monthly budget. I can honestly say I may own close to every color of Essie nail polish, I somehow ended up with a reindeer hat for my dog, and I don’t regret it a bit – because (and here is the issue) I still feel like I got a great deal.
“What?!” You ask, “Woman, you just spent $100 on shit that you didn’t even need at Target. You may need to go have your head examined and you should immediately turn around and go return that dog headband.”
And to that I say, but…….. Okay, there really is no excuse. It must be a mind game that Target has successfully brought to life by way of astoundingly cute commercials and being way, way classier than WalMart (shiver). It’s true, no matter how much money I am spending at Target I still feel like I am getting a great deal – it is extremely bizarre, because the fact is – Target isn’t really that cheap.
** cue sounds of cars screeching to a halt **
Yep, that’s right. You heard it here first. Target. Is. Not. That. Cheap. Period.
With rare exception you can find almost everything in Target for cheaper elsewhere. Try a thrift store, check out the non creepy people on Craigslist, hit up GoodWill, or take stock of what friends are moving and trying to get rid of things (because, let’s face it – in this decade we all move a lot). Your local grocery store likely has cheaper things available as well.
And now for the next “but.” It’s not even about where I could get it cheaper… I just love Target, and I know I’m not the only one. It’s so bright, and the home goods are adorable and on trend, you really can get everything there, and it is just so easy. I wonder if this is how people feel when heading into the Bermuda Triangle… they know what’s ahead, but they just can’t quite bring themselves to turn away… because who knows what could be coming really? It could be a great adventure.
And that is why I will continue to enter into the Target Triangle.
