As twenty-somethings, we move around a lot, from dorms to apartments and then maybe eventually into a house. Moving is a pain and I don’t know about you but I end up throwing a lot of stuff away.. some of which I live to regret. Recently I moved into a new apartment and decided that it needed something to brighten it up and add a little sparkle to the everyday. The perfect item? A bar cart!
I spent some time on Pinterest gathering inspiration and decided on the feel that I wanted and how I wanted to decorate it. Then it was time to look around for the bar cart, but the idea I had in my mind quickly faded when I saw the price tag that accompanied my dream cart online. My boyfriend suggested an Ikea-hack so off to Ikea we went to find the perfect piece to transform. We settled on a shelving unit from Ikea which was less than half of the price that my dream bar cart was and in my opinion came out to be better than that cart.
The key to the perfect bar cart is how you decorate it. I wanted mine to be very colorful; I wanted something that would add some sparkle to our living room.
I already had some wine glasses and champagne flutes with a nice serving tray that I wanted to be on the bar, so I knew that would take up a lot of the room. I went to Michael’s, the craft store, for everything else. I picked up a picture frame, some gold-glittered lettering, a couple of mason jars, some fake flowers, pastel paper straws and a pretty candle.
I cut the flowers so that they fit perfectly into the larger mason jar and put the paper straws in the other jar. Next, I made the sign below out of the lettering I bought and used a glittery piece of scrapbook paper as the border of the frame.
Adding this sparkly sign to the bar cart added the perfect final piece of shine and pulled the look all together perfectly. Now we have a bright, beautiful and sparkly centerpiece to the room and I couldn’t be happier.
As we all know, moving is expensive, and buying all of the necessities just adds up even more. When it comes to things you want rather than things you need, you have the flexibility to be more creative and save money along the way. I was excited to start this project and I’m so glad I ended up following through with it. Even though I tend to drink my wine and champagne too quickly for them to be actually be displayed in my bar cart, I just love it there as an accessory in my living room to brighten things up a bit!
