Alcohol is a tricky area in the realm of health, as for the most part it’s generally just empty calories. However, as twenty-somethings, alcohol is not something most of us are willing to cut out of our diets. Therefore, it’s nice to have a “healthier” option when consuming our liquid courage. Take this versatile, delicious, and relatively healthy Bloody Mary recipe to your next brunch or afternoon gathering and feel happy about your spiked choices.
The healthy part of a Bloody Mary is the tomato juice base, with the Tabasco spice that jump starts your metabolism. Add celery, olives, lime, and some spices, and you have a relatively healthy alcoholic beverage. The only thing, besides the vodka of course, that you have to be careful with is the salt. Don’t over-do the sodium or you’ll bloat faster than Veronica from Willy Wonka. Too much sodium can also lead to hypertension and stress on your heart, so make sure to watch the salt intake.
This recipe is relatively versatile, so if something sounds weird or if you don’t like hot sauce then you can eliminate items you don’t want. I’m supplying my personal recipe, but there are many other ways you can mix up the ingredients. I also personally recommend a higher quality vodka, with Titos being my favorite.
Start out with these items:
- Chilled Titos Vodka
- V8 Bloody Mary Mix
- Old Bay Seasoning
- Celery Salt
- Garlic Powder
- 2 limes
Before starting anything, squeeze the juice of half a lime onto a plate. Take a small shallow bowl, and run the rim of a clear glass, around the lime juice. Immediately swirl the glass in the bowl of old bay.
Next, fill the glass to the brim with ice. This is the key to a great bloody mary, so don’t skimp with the ice. Then, pour the Titos into the glass for four seconds (this is approximately one shot). In a seperate glass, pour the V8 mix half way full. Add two dashes of old bay, one dash of garlic powder, 2 dashes of pepper, one dash of celery salt, and Tabasco to taste. Stir all ingredients into mixture.
Pour the V8 mix into the ice and vodka and stir again. Garnish with olives, celery, a dash of old bay and a lime slice. Now enjoy the best Bloody Mary of your life.
