Now that I have been in Atlanta for almost 5 months (WOW), I wanted to give you my 5 favorite aspects of this southern city so far. Atlanta’s correctness cannot be overstated. From the weather to the people to the food, it is a southerner’s dream. The mix of southern culture with the opportunities to work for some amazing companies make it a perfect destination for anyone, especially young professionals. They are in no particular order:
- Overall Southernness (Correctness)
First on the list is Atlanta’s overall southernness. Did I mention how crucial this is? Overall southernness means the people are nice and classy, for the most part. People say “hey” just because. Atlanta is the perfect combination of “southern” and “city.” The food, feel and weather all embody everything that is correct in this world. We’ll just go ahead and forget about the snowpacalypse.
- Braves Games
With the beginning of spring comes the beginning of baseball season. While I long for college sports during this time, Braves games are a welcome distraction until football and basketball season. You can find cheap tickets online or walking into the game and Turner Field has a great atmosphere. Not to mention they are one of the best teams in the league. Also, baseball in the summer is correct and American. Add the beautiful southern weather and that’s a tough combination to beat.
Even though I haven’t been able to hang out with any of these rappers (they text me all the time, but I refuse to go out in Bankhead), including Ludacris, T.I., Young Jeezy and Usher. I am still holding out hope that I will see them at some point. We will hang out and it will be legendary. I may have to reconsider my refusal to go into Bankhead to make this happen, but I have yet to check out Lenox Square. Bankhead is my last resort. Just the possibility of running into any one of these artists is a major win for tha ATL, better known as tha “durty durty.”
Atlanta’s craft beer scene has exploded. The tours are a great excuse to drink on a beautiful spring/summer day. Sweetwater is probably the most well-known, offering $10 for six half pints and a free glass (depending on how generous your bartender is, you could be looking at closer to ¾ of a pint per ticket. Don’t forget to tip). On a nice day, they open up the patios and you can sit out and enjoy live music and great beer. I have also been on the Jekyll Brewing tour and strongly recommend that as well. Did I mention that Atlanta southern and correct, already?
- Great Place to Meet a Southern Belle or Gentleman
Spring may bring baseball, but more importantly, it brings sundresses and seersucker. The city is stocked full of southern catches. If you’re looking for a “correct” southern belle or gentleman, Atlanta has you covered. For this southern gentleman, it’s sweet, classy southern girls. Kenny Chesney pretty much nails it- “Southern girls are God’s gift to the entire male population. There is absolutely no woman finer than one raised below the Mason-Dixon line and once you go southern may the good Lord help you – you never go back.”
There are so many more things I love about Atlanta, but so far these are my favorites. Peace up, A-town down.
