2015 sounds completely different from 1970, but is it really? Reflecting on movies like Grease – you live for those hot summer nights where it’s just you, the beau, and the beach! Unfortunately for me that’s all a figment of my imagination. As a single twenty-something, I wonder were those summer flings ever real or just another movie saved to my Netflix account!
I don’t know what it is about the summer, but as soon as the temperature rises, people start breaking up and looking for summer fun. You would think that would go away as we get older, but I have only noticed a few differences:
1. All of your trips are now planned with your closest friends – not the parentals.
2. Summer break doesn’t exist in the office (unless you’re a teacher of course). Vacation days have to be earned and approved by your not-so-twenty-something boss, who no longer understands the separation anxiety of not being off during the summer.
3. The guys are even hotter with their beach-ready bods, but the yearning for summer love is just out of the picture.
Numbers 1 and 2 are obvious, but number 3 is just unfortunate. As a teen, you would meet the cute guy at the resort that would coincidentally be the same age as you. You followed each other around and vowed to meet again next summer…now this is just insane! Chances are if I see a hot guy at a resort I look to my bff and say “girl, he’s cute…oh well, so what’s next on the itinerary?” Not giving the hunk a second thought.
Why is this? I’m no expert, but it seems our level of maturity has trumped puppy love.
Unfortunately, long nights talking for hours on the phone, laying out in the sand, and sneaking into movies just aren’t the norm. We only have a week vacation with the girls and we don’t want to waste a minute of it making small talk with a random dude. The value of friendships, family, and even a small break from work is worth so much more. If I’m on vacation the first thing on my agenda is getting a fruity cocktail with an umbrella while sitting under an umbrella…alone! All buff men can take a number!
Classics like Grease, Dirty Dancing and Clueless will always be favorites but I’m pretty sure there is a reason the main characters were in high school. As fun as Summer flings were they have turned into summer weddings, summer proposals, or in my case just a hot day. This is not bad at all, just another sign we have grown into driven, mature adults. Our focus then was the latest issue of Teen Magazine and how much trouble we could get into and now it’s making ourselves better to one day focus on planning those family vacations for our teens. Guess I’ll cozy up with my dog and watch old movies all summer and reminisce on those puppy love days.
