What is the first thing you do when you know you are going to go on a holiday? Get excited of course?! What is the second thing you do when you know you are going on holiday? Crap…What am I going to take with me?
I know most of you can all agree that it just plan sucks when it comes to packing for a holiday, I mean you don’t want to take everything but the kitchen sink; but then you don’t want to end up spending extra $$ on the basics because you left them at home…
Also I am going to put it out there, most men I know are pretty horrible packers, they leave it to the last minute and if they are in a relationship its likely that their girlfriend/boyfriend will pack for them. But hey if you beat my stereotype you earn respect and a high five from me!
Since I have been lucky enough to do a fair amount of traveling I thought I would give you a rundown of things that you should make top priority when packing, this is aimed a little bit more to the long term traveller but also fits for short term as well. Because at the end of the day who wants to deal with scrummaging through their bags trying to find whatever you need, only to realise you left it at home!
Below is the list of essentials for any holiday:
–Clothes appropriate to the climate you are going to: so for summer, shorts, t-shirts, dresses, underwear, sandals, shoes and socks plus a hat and a pair of sunglasses. That’s it, basics only…If you have spare room leftover after you have finished packing then you can include the extras like sarongs or accessories. For winter you modify the type items stated above to fit the climate, change hats to beanies etc..
–Toiletries: now this is where us females get just a little bit cray cray. Lets all be honest here, we don’t need all types of hair products and sweet smelling body products. This is what you should be packing, shampoo and conditioner (preferably in small containers) soap or body wash not both! tooth brush, tooth paste, hair brush, appropriate shaver and some moisturiser that has sunscreen in it (this also includes face moisturiser) Then lastly a facial wash. NOTHING ELSE! I mean it, if you are going to travel for a long period of time you need to be smart! And if you are twenty something you have yet to reach the stage of applying intense anti wrinkle stuff.
–Electronics & Books: if you are really smart, for books you would have a kindle or something similar loaded up with every book you plan to read. Electronics should only be camera, mobile and there appropriate chargers. What else would you need? (no hair dryer and straighteners should not be included, if you are staying in hotels there will be hair dyers provided and a straightener…common your on holiday be young wild and free?!)
–Makeup: A SMALL little clutch like bag with a basic selection, 1 foundation, 1 mascara, 1 eye liner, 1 small eye palette, 1 bronzer and 1 blush with the appropriate brushes. This should not be a huge bag.
And there you have it the essentials…keep in mind guys that your bags will be only slightly smaller that us girls. But there is NO excuse for slacking off! I know there will be some of you going what about this, what about that, just remember this is the essentials if you bag is super small you are most entitled to add the extras..
Now don’t you feel a bit better?
