You may have moved on from dealing with different cliques and popularity contents on the high-school playground, but managing relationships in the workplace can be just as tricky.
From judging whether you should connect with co-workers on social media, to worrying how hard you partied at last week’s Friday night drinks, navigating where you stand with colleagues is its own sea.
Here’s a Q&A for your map to survival…
Can you be mates with colleagues outside of work?
Of course it’s ok to be “friends” with co-workers, but the bigger picture is how far that goes. When you’re new, you might want to take this slowly rather than becoming the ‘office socialite’ – though it’s a great title, you’ve been hired to do a job and you need to meet those standards of professionalism.
Should you have your colleagues on Facebook?
This largely depends on your company’s environment and culture – and how “buddy buddy” everyone is. If you’re worried about accepting your new work-bestie’s friend request because she’ll realize you’re a total party animal on the weekends, it’s probably a safer option to not go there. That, or it’s time to tidy up your online profile and make it work-safe.
I fancy a guy I work with, is that a no-no?
Ooh-la-la. Most people prefer to keep this under wraps at work, it can be a lot of pressure if everyone knows – and nobody wants to be the heart of the office gossip. Take it slowly and be sensible, but just know that you’re not the only one that’s been through this – quite a few people meet their partners as a result of work! But be smart about it.
What happens if you don’t get along well with a certain co-worker?
This is likely to be something you deal with at any workplace, and it’s something you’ll probably encounter in all stages of life. There are some people we get along with and others we simply don’t click with. But you need to figure out the best strategy to get around this. Whether that’s mentally creating your own bubble around your desk to help you through it, or taking short breaks and getting fresh air and exercise, try not to let it get to you and have faith in yourself that you’ll figure it out.
You still haven’t covered how I redeem myself from the after-work-drinks mishap… Help?!
Some (more than others) do need to be mindful of how much alcohol they consume at the good ol’ Friday night drinks. But rest assured, being a bit silly happens to the best of us – hey, you were just trying to have a good time, right? – just don’t make a habit out of it. By all means go along and enjoy yourself, but keep in mind that you will be seeing everyone from the bar at the office bright and early on Monday morning.
Now it’s up to you… Good luck!
