Okay so don’t kill me, but I kind of forgot that Hilary Duff was the pop princess whose CD’s were always on repeat in my boom box (I’m fucking old) until last week at work when Come Clean randomly came onto my Spotify playlist. As the lyrics to the 2004 (yes that was 12 years ago) classic filled my head, I was instantly transported back to my 10 year old self singing into my hairbrush trying to pretend I actually wasn’t singing like a maniac when my mom would burst into my room. Like most things about childhood, I took Hilary and her catchy beats for granted.
Here’s a look at some of my favorites:
First off – outfit envy in this music video, only Hilary can pull off a dressed down look with a shirt made for hoeing at the club with a pair of black Chucks. Can’t say I agree with the brass knuckle necklace, seems a little aggressive for this song, but we’ll let it slide. I love that this song is subtlety telling you to get off your ass and go after your dreams because why not? There’s no time like the present, am I right Hilz? And the lyric: “You always dress in yellow when you wanna dress in gold,” should go down as one of the best lines in history.
The original fuck boi anthem. Before Carrie Underwood was keying cars and beating in tail lights we had Hilary here stealing clothes and snapping polaroids. Tbh this guy totally deserved it because anyone who wears an “Everything is Bigger in Texas” t-shirt can exit stage left. She’s not afraid to tell everyone that she looks better in her boyfriend’s jeans then he does, because hell yes she does. Haven’t you heard, you’re so yesterday?
I never really understood what this song was about but as I listen to it on repeat I feel like its verrrryyyy sexual. Nothing says 2004 like Hilz with the thick black eye liner and the scrunched hair, basically my uniform throughout my middle school years. The one thing I will say about this music video, the rain is a little aggressive (Hilz, you’re in a brand new, beautiful house but at 1:35 you’re catching rain drops in a pot at your kitchen table, lets tone down the dramatics), but bless that man for driving in a monsoon with his flip phone. Overall, if you don’t remember every word to this song were you even alive in the 2000’s?
What Dreams Are Made Of
Okay I know that this song wasn’t “technically” Hilary Duff because Lizzie McGuire but any half decent Hilz fan had The Lizzie McGuire movie on DVD. Tbh I was honestly stumped as a child and really thought Isabella was a different actor (yea I hate myself too). This was the one movie my sister and I would agree on watching and I knew the dance moves so well I performed the song at my middle school talent show. I wish I could say my performance was as well received by my classmates as Hilary’s but hey one of us had to be normal.
This is like the perfect Saturday pump up song for pre-teens. No cursing, no references to drugs or alcohol just random cities around the globe. This song isn’t one of my top from Hilary but it still makes the list because I know every word. Its just good girl Hilary telling you to kill it on the dance floor and forget about everything else, just live for that Saturday night Post- nose job Hilz still has it.
Our Lips Are Sealed
I honestly don’t know what it is about this song, I just love it. Just Hilary and her sister telling the world (nicely, of course) that they don’t give a shit about you and your gossip. They’re above it all. Their lips are sealed (in case you couldn’t tell by the song lyrics).
Someone’s Watching Over Me/ Fly
Raise Your Voice has to go down as one of my favorite movies of the early 2000’s. Honestly, it was actually pretty emotional and heavy for us middle schoolers, but Hilz helped us push through with this song and Fly. I really think (seriously) this song is so beautiful and I think Hilary does an amazing job, plus I was 100% convinced I was going to marry Oliver James. My 10 year old self also had undying rage against her father in this movie because no one comes between Hilary and her dreams. No one.
Hilary is back with another power anthem. I love how many of her songs are basically telling us to just get after it. Whatever it is you want to make your life about, you have to be the one to chase those dreams and make it happen. I kind of wish that this song wasn’t just part of the credits in Raise Your Voice but hey, still a great song either way.
Beat of My Heart
I don’t know how well received this song was received by Hilz’s fans. I feel like when it came out we were on the tail end of the Hilary Duff golden age so it might not have been as popular. BUT nevertheless, I love this song and think Hilz kills it in her whole headband getup.
Well that’s it Hilz, thanks for the memories and the classics that I will forever know the words too. Thanks for being a functioning Disney star and not completely losing your mind (looking at you Miley & Lindsay). Love ya girl.
