This past Memorial Day weekend was one of the best yet. If you’ve never been to Portland, Maine (not to be confused with Portland, OR) before, you need to check it out. Before my trip, everyone told me nothing but great things about it and I couldn’t wait to check it out myself so I could give you all the scoop on what exactly you should do and see while there. I had a whole list prepared of places to go and see, and each one of them exceeded my expectations. So, what should you do?
For all you foodies:
If you’re in the mood for a big piece of steak or a lover of pork chops this is the place to go. Try to sit at the bar and ask for the bartender Zoli. Trust me, he will make your dining experience that much better.
When you go to any part of Maine, a lobster is mandatory. It’s famous for it. We had oysters to start – also, very fresh, then ended with our lobster dinners! This restaurant is right on the water too which is always a plus.
And if you’re a sucker for dessert like I am, this is a must. We had the peanut butter chocolate cake and it was perfection. They also have a list of dessert martinis you can choose from. I had the peanut butter one and my boyfriend had the espresso! They were just as delish as the cake.
If you’re in need of a great cocktail or beer – aren’t we always?
Every person we asked for a recommendation on where to go for a great drink told us to go here. All the cocktails are simple, yet bold. I drank the White Noise which contains carbonated elderflower, cocchi, and grapefruit zest – delicious.
This place specializes in their craft mocktails and cocktails. They have a wide selection of drinks. Each drink I ordered was unique and I was surprised with how well the ingredients came together.
If you’re a beer lover, you have to go this beer bar/garden! It has an endless amount of different style beer. We went here late night and the outside patio was packed with people at tables while some were playing corn-hole.
If you’re feeling adventurous:
There are many small islands and forts off of Portland. The most popular island to see is called, Peaks Island. One morning we took a ferry to visit the island and rented a golf cart to drive around in! It was so much fun and was beautiful to see. You can also rent a kayak and visit the other islands and forts around.
Portland is definitely a great place for foodies and drink connoisseurs. But it is also a charming, quaint town with a lot to explore. The shopping there is amazing too! They have many stores and boutiques. This is a perfect, quick little getaway spot for you New Englanders. Even if you’re not from the area, it is worth coming out to see. We stayed at the Hyatt which is smack dab in the middle of everything. Another thing I fell in love with? It’s completely dog friendly and the people there are even friendlier too.
