I’m a self proclaimed book nerd and I make no apologies for it. Much like writing, reading is my escape from reality and whether it’s by the pool or barricaded under the covers in my bed, once I pick up a book I love I can’t seem to put it down. My goal for this year was to read at least one new book a month. Seeing as how I haven’t taken an actual vacation yet, I’ve been doing a heck of a lot of reading and wanted to share some of my must reads for everyone in their twenties. Get ready to settle in, grab a glass of wine, and possibly laugh your bum off.
Rich Bitch by Nicole Lapin:
Ok let’s get real, I bought the book solely based on the title. Guilty. Nonetheless I’m so glad I did! Finances aren’t something I ever really gave much thought to when I was younger. I had the whole “why save money when you can spend it mentality.” Yeah, not smart. As you get older you realize that your credit score is more than just a number on a piece of paper. It can either make or break you when it comes to financing that dream car or buying your first home. Rich Bitch breaks down the basics and Nicole Lapin speaks in terms that makes you get it. I didn’t feel like I was the only freshman sitting in a calculus class full of seniors. I started using the tips she gives and it’s made such a difference in my finances. I knew I loved this book when she totally justified my Starbucks addiction and I couldn’t put it down.
#GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso:
Sophia is the brilliant mind behind Nasty Gal who started out with an ebay store and created a vintage phenomenon. Every single person in their twenties needs to read this. She puts such an emphasis on working hard for what you want and never belittling the smaller jobs. She talks about her own failures and how there is always an opportunity for success no matter what. We live in a generation of entitlement and we need to get back to the “if you want it, work for it” mentality.
I Had a Nice Time… and other lies by The Betches:
Holy mimosa! I. love. these. betches! It gives the how to’s, what if’s and the oh shit’s of modern day dating. Everything from the first date to social media etiquette. Not afraid to call out the delusional daters, this book puts you in your place. Between the datings apps, blind dates, and everything in between, you definitely need this book to help you get your sh*t together.
Nice Girls Don’t Get The Corner Office by Lois P. Frankel:
Listen, Girl Scouts may have been fun when you were like 10, but once you blossom into the big girl that you are and have to get a job, you have to learn how to grow a backbone. I bought this book to help give me some insight into management and being a newbie as well as a girl, which is just double the frustration. She breaks down a lot of unconscious mistakes that I wasn’t even aware of until I started paying attention and taking inventory of how I acted inside the office. Tips on everything from how you dress to body language and how you interact with everyone around you. A definite must if you’re headed for a career!
These are just a few of my favorites and the books I personally got something out of. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer, having too much fun and getting too much sun!
Until next week
